REMOVING THE STIGMA
This video is a faith-based mental health workshop led by two social workers, Martha Unger and Darlene Martens, aimed at church communities. It covers depression, postpartum depression, and anxiety — blending clinical explanations (symptoms, causes, the brain's stress response) with biblical perspectives, using scripture and figures like David, Job, and Paul who experienced similar struggles. The core focus is addressing the stigma around mental health within churches, illustrated through relatable stories of people who felt dismissed or judged when they opened up. Martha and Darlene offer ten practical strategies — from vulnerability in leadership to education, support groups, and busting common myths — to help churches respond with grace and compassion rather than judgment, closing with reflection questions for leaders and congregants on how they can help.

Breaking stigma with grace
About 20% of Canadians struggle with a mental health concern, and Christians are not exempt from that reality. Over the years, the church has sometimes dismissed people who were struggling, leaving them feeling sad, lonely, hurt, guilty, or spiritually confused.
At Deer Run Church, we want to break down stigma by supporting people with grace, practical resources, and simple strategies that can make a difference in your life and in the lives of others. These resources are not online therapy; please seek an individual counsellor and, when needed, a medical practitioner.
